Common no-start questions

My UTV clicks once but will not crank. Where do I start?

A single click almost always points at the starter circuit or a weak battery. Check resting battery voltage first, then look for at least 12 volts reaching the starter solenoid when a helper presses start. If the battery is healthy and voltage is present, the solenoid or starter is the likely fault.

What voltage should a healthy ATV battery show?

A fully charged 12 volt battery reads about 12.6 to 12.8 volts at rest with the key off. Under 12.4 volts means it needs a charge, and if it will not hold a charge or drops below about 9.6 volts under cranking load, the battery is worn out.

Do I need special tools to diagnose these problems?

A basic digital multimeter and a test light cover most of the work in these guides. A few checks use a battery load tester or a jumper wire, and we call those out where needed. You do not need a factory scan tool for the majority of no-start faults.

Is it safe to bypass a safety switch to test it?

Only briefly, only for a controlled test, and never as a permanent fix. Safety interlocks exist to stop the machine starting in gear or without a rider seated. Our guides show how to confirm a switch is the fault, then how to replace it rather than leave it bypassed.
